Ha, I was all enthused to start this blog, but now I don't know where to begin. I suppose I'll talk about Gizmo first, he's the one this is really all about.
Gizmo is my pet fox. He's a full-blood North American Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes fulva), though his odd coloration often leads to people asking if he's mixed with anything else. He is captive born and bred, and has never known the wild. The same with his parents, and grandparents, and so on for many generations.
Because his mother rejected him, Mandy (his breeder) had to bottle-feed him right from the very beginning. He's been completely socialized to people, and is completely tame. I've taught him several tricks; he's a very fast learner.
Also, I'd like to make it clear from the start that I do NOT recommend foxes as pets for most people. It's like having a cat, a dog, and a tempermental two-year-old all rolled up into one package. Gizmo is adorable, but he is also a massive amount of work. Keeping a pet fox is just something that most people would not have the time and energy for.

this is an amazing blog and i thank you for writing it. more people should be educated about foxes as pets. i for one have the time, budget, and space along with a various education to own one, however i will not until i know more, but until then i can only say im glad this blog exists and im excited to read the newest news.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is great! I really want a pet fox, and your blog has taught me how to take care of it. At first, we wanted an arctic fox, but after some research, we were thinking of getting something else. Where I live, the winter temps are always under 30 degrees F. But in the summer it can get hotter than 90 degrees. We were thinking that in the winter have it outside, and in the summer keep it inside. If so, do you think that would work? Our next breed that we are looking at is the red fox. Now, like you said, they should have plenty of space. The thing is, we don't have a huge backyard. I mean, it's the average size, so it's somewhat big, somewhat small. We have a Siberian Husky, so if we were to get a red fox, they would both loose some energy playing together. We also have a little play area with a small slide and some hiding spots in it. My dog loves to go play in it, but would a red or arctic fox? My dog is a female. If we did get a fox, should we get a tod or vixen? Should we feed it dog or cat food? Oh, and yes. My state allows pet foxes :) Your blog is great! If you can, please answer!
